Uganda Program’s 10th Anniversary Celebrations

On 1st December 2017, Uganda Program staff based in Kampala hosted a dinner at Hotel Africana to celebrate AIRD’s 10th Anniversary. Like other Programs in West and Central Africa, Uganda Program staff used the opportunity to commemorate the organisation's milestones. Despite the challenges and constraints in our work AIRD has proven itself to offer timely results to persons of concern and partners.

The function was graced by the Commissioner for Refugees in the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) Mr. David Apollo Kazungu, UNHCR officials and AIRD Members of the Board of Directors.

AIRD CEO Mr. Mathias Temesgen applauded partners such as the government of Uganda through OPM and UNHCR who believed in the organization’s dream and vision and support it to date.  He also acknowledged the contribution and sacrifices made by AIRD founding members and the BOD plus the unwavering hard work of the staff.  “I know that we have come a long way but we still have a lot to do. AIRD is currently offering relief services but we haven’t tapped into development work. We have the potential and capacity so this what we ought to look into going forward.” Mr. Mathias said.

The Commissioner for refugees Mr. Kazungu said AIRD is one of the first indigenous NGOs in Uganda to grow in refugee response. He added that this has been because of the organizations commitment and intergrity. “The refugee response is growing world over and Uganda is competing with the rest of these other countries for the same resources,” How we handle resources allocated to us is what well set us apart from the rest, he said. Mr. Kazungu urged AIRD staff to uphold values of integrity and timely delivery of quality services.

The UNCHR representative Ms. Aida Mirembe said AIRD has established its niche in the NGO world as the best logistics provider.  “This is one of the most critical components in refugee response and AIRD always delivers on this front,” she said. Ms. Mirembe mentioned that AIRD is always the first NGO at the scene right from picking refugees from border points to settlements, registration and the last to leave. She added that UNHCR shares AIRD’s strategic plans of development and diversification of services, partnerships and donors.

The Commissioner Mr. Kazungu awarded certificates to AIRD’s longest serving staff who have been with the organization since its establishment. Uganda Program is AIRD’s oldest Program having started operations in 2007.

Entertainment and donations

The Program selected Miracle Group of dancers to entertain the staff and guests. The group is composed of Rwandan and Burundian refugees. The Country Program Director Mr. Abraham Konneh said, they hired Miracle group to support the refugees and also boost their livelihood.

The program also donated scholastic materials to over 70 vulnerable children to assist in their education. They were identified with the assistance of Interaid Uganda, a local NGO which works with disadvantaged communities and groups of people.
