When working in emergency situation; this calls for dedication, drive, persistence, innovation and the ability to provide realistic and feasible solutions to the varying tasks in a timely manner to ensure the people of concern are not put at further risk.
Every country has a different refugee or IDP crisis which require varied solutions. The AIRD staff has amassed a wealth of experiences and knowledge over the last 10 years and is able to provide services tailored to respective emergencies.
From navigating bad roads to moving building materials on the Congo River in DRC and braving insecurities in the Central African Republic; AIRD will extend relief services to the persons of concern under any condition. This reinforces our commitment to empowering and improving the welfare of refugee and IDP communities.
AIRD strives to match the needs of the persons of concern by providing solutions tailored to their situation. This is possible because of the specified competences we have in the fields of logistics, construction and infrastructure backed by the experts who coordinate the activities for the different programs.
Bearing in mind our goal of providing sustainable solutions to refugees and IDP, we get the communities involved in the work by training some of the community members and enlisting their help in activities such as construction of shelters, roads, bridges, schools and health centres. Such people later become a great resource to their communities.
At the core of humanitarian activities is the aspect of logistics and supporting both UN Agencies and partner organizations; since AIRD has extensive experience in logistics and understands that most of the activities in refugee and IDP camps and settlements revolve around logistics, we work with the highest level efficiency.
AIRD has a wealth of experience in construction, infrastructure and rehabilitation led by teams of professional engineers both national and expatriate.
Along with facilitating construction and infrastructure, AIRD provides technical support in designing plans, bills of quantity and preparation of various quotations. Our projects’ experience ranges from road and bridge construction and rehabilitation, sanitation, water tracking to construction of education and medical facilities.
AIRD’s drug management systems were created to improve the efficiency of pharmaceutical procurement, storage and distribution in funded health programs. The objective of the program is to improve the quality of drug consumption, reports from the field and to promote rational use of drugs by training the health workers involved in drug management on how to best use. This activity is currently being implemented only in Uganda.
AIRD monitors and evaluates operation of fuel stations and fuel consumption assets used on the sites of operations for both UNHCR and partner organizations. For efficiency, AIRD uses its proprietary information management systems to monitor and track fuel inventories and fuel issued. The organization goes a step further to train local staff with skills to operate the systems as well. It’s also ensured that all procedures, forms and regulations necessary to operate these systems are well designed and are readily available.
Returning home to countries of origin for most refugees is a dream. UNHCR provides refugees with a choice to return home in safety and dignity after securing the commitment of the country of origin to help reintegrate its own people. AIRD has been assisting with this process, transporting the persons of concern who decide to go back home.
Safe movement of Non Food Items (NFIs) from warehouses to camps/settlements, transportation of both UNHCR and partner staff to the field the settlements is our benchmark. AIRD also ensures that trucks, vehicles, motorbikes and boats are availed for transport whenever necessary. The transportation management solutions AIRD provides the smooth running of the partner activities and delivery of services to the beneficiaries.
AIRD facilitates regular trainings of drivers, giving them refresher skills to improve their skills and make them better drivers. This is to ensure safe transportation of the persons of concern, partner staff and NFIs. This makes the organization highly reliable and commendable when it comes to transport management.
AIRD has been persistent in providing unrivalled expertise in warehousing in all the countries of operation. Our experience meets the needs of the partners plus those of the beneficiaries in the camps/settlements. We ensure that all the (NFIs) are kept in the right conditions and ready for distribution to the people of concern on time.
The warehouses are kept free of rodents and any other pests by fumigating regularly. To avoid theft of the stored items, there is restricted access to the warehouses, and routine checks are carried out on all staff who have access to the facility.
Water Sanitation and Hygiene is an important aspect in all communities but even more so in refugee camps/settlements. The communities are prone to disease outbreaks such as cholera, dysentery and malaria all which can be fatal in a small amount of time due to overcrowding in the camps.
Seeing as access to clean water is a basic human need, AIRD has recruited personnel with specific training in construction of water points such as boreholes to give people a source of clean water for daily activities. AIRD is also involved in water trucking in some of the camps with large numbers of people of beneficiaries but with fewer water points.
For the vehicles and other machinery like generators to be in proper mechanical condition at all times, the program operates workshops that do regular maintenance. Maintenance includes service and repairs when needed.
AIRD guarantees professionalism by deploying highly trained and specialized mechanics who manage the workshops and maintenance of the vehicles. All road licenses and insurance for project vehicles are renewed for a period of one year.
