As part of a comprehensive WASH project funded by BHA/USAID, in Ethiopia, AIRD is implementing transformative interventions in Yalo Woreda, Zone 4, Afar Regional State. The project spans three key kebeles—Dibina, Nafto, and Gidela—and prioritizes hygiene promotion to combat preventable diseases and improve community health.

Utilizing ten well-trained community hygiene promoters, AIRD has deployed teams to conduct home-to-home visits and facilitate focus group discussions (FGDs). These activities emphasize adopting critical hygiene practices, including proper handwashing with soap at five key times: after using the toilet, before preparing food, before meals, after cleaning a child’s bottom, and after other high-risk activities. The project also raises awareness about safe water handling, latrine usage, and environmental sanitation.

Mayiram Adem’s Journey: From Community Member to Hygiene Promoter

Mayiram Adem, a 27-year-old resident of Dibina Kebele, joined AIRD as a hygiene promoter in September 2024. Reflecting on her experience, she shared:

“After joining AIRD, I gained invaluable skills through their capacity-building training. I learned how to protect myself, my family, and my community from preventable diseases caused by poor hygiene practices. It has been incredibly rewarding to raise awareness about proper handwashing, safe water handling, environmental sanitation, and latrine use.”

Beyond personal growth and empowerment, Mayiram found economic stability through her role. She explained:

“Before, I struggled to find work. For women in my community, cultural traditions often require us to stay home and serve our families, making it challenging to seek employment far away. Thanks to AIRD, I now have a job that allows me to support my family while working within my community. The skills I’ve gained have empowered me to pursue future opportunities and continue serving others.”

Mayiram’s story highlights how AIRD’s WASH project not only improves hygiene practices but also empowers local women by providing training and employment. This initiative is a vital step towards building healthier, more resilient communities in Afar.
