Kampala, Uganda. In a powerful show of solidarity and commitment to Refugee inclusion, the Office of the President of Uganda, through the Diaspora Affairs Department, officially launched the Urban Refugee Marathon, an event slated for June 20, 2025. The launch was attended by members of the media, urban refugee representatives, development partners, sponsors, and host community members.
Presiding over the launch was the Senior Presidential Advisor and Ambassador for Diaspora Affairs, H.E. Abbey Walusimbi, who emphasized Uganda’s internationally recognized open-door policy toward refugees. He pointed out that Uganda is one of the few countries in the world where refugees have rights similar to those of citizens, including access to education, health services, and the freedom to move and work.
A major sponsor of the event is AIRD (African Initiatives for Relief and Development), a humanitarian organization playing a key role in refugee response across the region. Mr. Fikru Abebe, the CEO of AIRD, commended the Ugandan government for its exceptional hospitality and policy of refugee inclusion.
“ We are happy to be part of this event, and very appreciative to the Government for opening its arms to refugees and allowing them to integrate into the community through providing them with social services, giving them land to settle among others”. Fikru pledged his continuous support in helping refugees reach their full potential.
One of the most emotional moments of the event came from Oliver Bakomezi, a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo, who spoke on behalf of his fellow refugees. He expressed deep gratitude to the government and its partners for their unwavering support.
“We are not forgotten. We feel seen, heard, and supported. Uganda has given us hope and a future. We are ready to contribute to the prosperity of this country wherever we are,” he said.
The Urban Refugee Marathon will serve as more than just a sporting event. It aims to foster unity among diverse refugee communities, create a platform for raising awareness on issues affecting urban refugees, and galvanize action from stakeholders to improve their living conditions and promote social integration.
Organizers expect participation from thousands of urban refugees and Ugandan nationals. The event is also seen as a model for refugee-hosting countries looking to enhance cohesion and inclusion through creative and engaging platforms.
With Uganda currently hosting 1.8 million refugees, one of the largest refugee populations in Africa, the upcoming marathon is a testament to the country’s progressive approach toward refugee protection and integration.
As preparations gain momentum, the Urban Refugee Marathon promises to be not only a celebration of resilience but also a collective call for continued solidarity, dignity, and hope.
