The AIRD South Sudan Program conducted an intensive labor-based public works training on 10th November 2025 for 224 refugee beneficiaries and five members of the Doro Camp management Executive Committee at the JRS multipurpose hall in Doro Refugee Camp, Maban County, Upper State, South Sudan.

The beneficiaries were trained on the management of public works, road rehabilitation tools and equipment, safety precautions while on site, grievance reporting, and feedback management. The trainees were trained on road formation, alignments, compacting using chambers and rampers, usage of AIRD visibility reflector jackets while at work and off work. They were also trained on prevention against sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment, as well as child protection.

The one-day training was facilitated by Abui Robert, the Senior Construction Officer for AIRD South Sudan, together with the refugee incentive and community mobilizers.

Petia Suliman Loro, the procurement officer, representing the AIRD project Manager at the training, encouraged all the beneficiaries to maximally utilize the skills and knowledge acquired at the training for their individual future livelihoods while at the refugee camp in South Sudan and when they go back to Sudan and Ethiopia when peace prevails, adding that the current global economic dynamics require hands-on job skills.

Ahmed Mahjoub, the chairperson of Doro Camp Executive Committee, applauded AIRD South Sudan for organizing and conducting an educative, interactive, and practical training for the community. He encouraged the beneficiaries not to attend trainings for monetary benefit but to get the right skills and knowledge that are lifelong assets.

At the end of the training, the 224 beneficiaries were grouped into 9 groups to receive tools and equipment, including wheelbarrows, hoes, forked hoes, shovels and spades, rakes, tape measures, craw bars, health safety kits, slashers, pangas, nylon and sisal ropes, gumboots, reflectors jackets, pick axes, claw hammers, water jerricans and cups. Each group is responsible for the safety of the tools and equipment and shall return them to AIRD after the completion of the projects.

This public works labor-intensive project runs from 11th November 2025 to 10th December 2025. AIRD manages the mobilizations, technical expertise, and actual implementation, while UNHCR manages the funds transfer to the beneficiaries.

The project is funded by the African Development Bank through UNHCR in Partnership with the Government of the Republic of South Sudan.
