For many refugees, education is often an unattainable dream. But for Fiona Poni, a South Sudanese refugee in Uganda, that dream became a reality—thanks to the support of AIRD.On February 21, 2025, Fiona proudly walked across the stage at UMCAT School of Journalism and Mass Communication, graduating with a Diploma in Journalism and Media Studies. Her journey was not easy, but her determination, coupled with AIRD’s unwavering support, helped her defy the odds.

Fiona is one of 22 students—18 refugees and 4 members of the host community—sponsored by AIRD to complete their education. Through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, AIRD is ensuring that refugees and host communities alike have access to education, giving them the tools to build a brighter future.

For Fiona, the support from AIRD went beyond tuition. The organization sponsored her from secondary school to university, covering her accommodation and living expenses so she could focus entirely on her studies.

“AIRD didn’t just educate me; they gave me hope and a future. I want to use my voice to advocate for the rights of refugees and other vulnerable groups,” Fiona shared.

The impact of this initiative is profound. Mr. Aliou Tandia, AIRD’s Country Program Director in Uganda, emphasized that education is a powerful tool for change, enabling refugees to break free from poverty, become self-reliant, and uplift their communities.

Fiona’s inspiring journey was also featured in New Vision, a leading national newspaper in Uganda, a testament to the significance of her achievement.

With her diploma in hand and a passion for storytelling, Fiona is now ready to make her mark in the media industry, using her platform to amplify the voices of the marginalized. Her story is a reminder that when given the right opportunities, refugees can not only survive but thrive.

AIRD remains committed to supporting education, ensuring that more young people like Fiona can turn their dreams into reality.
