On July 20, 2025, AIRD partnered with the Office of the President Diaspora Affairs to host the Urban Refugee Marathon in Kampala, Uganda. The event brought together a vibrant mix of participants, including urban refugees, government officials, development partners, AIRD staff, and members of the host community, all united by a common cause: fostering unity, inclusion, and progress for refugees living in urban areas.

The Chief Guest, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, the 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, said, “This marathon symbolizes our belief in refugees and host communities working together, living together, and progressing together,”. She highlighted Uganda’s progressive refugee policies, which permit refugees to live outside camps, work legally, and access all services.

AIRD’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Fikru Abebe, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting refugees not only in rural settlements but also in urban contexts. “We continue to ensure that refugees have shelter as they integrate, transport facilitation to camps, repatriation services, and warehousing to safely store non-food items essential for daily life,” he noted.

The marathon was not only a physical event but a powerful symbol of resilience, inclusion, and shared humanity. Refugees ran side by side with Ugandan nationals, showing that despite challenges, they are active members of society who contribute meaningfully to their communities.
The event served as a reminder of the importance of creating inclusive spaces where refugees are recognized not just as beneficiaries of aid, but as individuals with potential and agency. For AIRD, it was an opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to dignity, service, and impactful partnerships that drive change on the ground.

With the resounding success of the Urban Refugee Marathon, AIRD and its partners have taken yet another meaningful step toward building stronger, more inclusive communities in Uganda and beyond.
