At AIRD Tanzania, progress is not only measured by the kilometers covered but also by the barriers dismantled along the way. In order to build communities and foster sustainable employability, we believe that real change comes when opportunities are extended to all, regardless of gender.
In our Kibondo and Kasulu offices, exceptional women have stepped into a space that has long been defined by men: professional driving within humanitarian fleet operations. As the only female drivers at AIRD Tanzania, Shani and Tumu were recruited under the Smart Fleet Project; their role goes far beyond transporting vehicles from one point to another. They are key contributors to our broader goal of achieving fleet cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and accountability in managing UNHCR vehicles.

Their daily work is demanding; navigating rugged terrains, delivering timely humanitarian support, and ensuring that operations run smoothly. Yet, with resilience, skill, and determination, they prove every day that excellence is not tied to gender. Each journey they undertake is a powerful statement that women have the capacity, the talent, and the strength to thrive in roles once thought to be reserved for men.
At AIRD, we recognize that promoting gender inclusivity is not only a matter of fairness but also a driver of sustainable development. By recruiting and empowering women in our fleet operations, we are not just filling positions; we are building pathways to elevate livelihoods, strengthen communities, and inspire future generations. These women are not only drivers of vehicles; they are drivers of social change.

Their courage challenges deep-rooted stereotypes and creates visibility for women’s rights in the workplace. For every young girl in Kigoma, Kasulu, Kibondo, and beyond, seeing a woman behind the wheel of a humanitarian vehicle is a symbol of possibility. It reinforces the message that dreams have no gender and that every career path is open to those who dare to pursue it.

This step forward aligns with AIRD’s values of respect, empowerment, and community development. By supporting women to thrive in male-dominated fields, we create an inclusive environment where dignity and equal opportunity are safeguarded. The ripple effect goes far beyond the organization; touching families, inspiring communities, and nurturing a culture of inclusion.

We are proud of these three trailblazers who represent not only AIRD’s commitment to diversity but also the spirit of resilience within every woman. They are steering us forward, showing that the future of humanitarian logistics is not only about cost-effectiveness and efficiency but also about justice, equity, and opportunity.

At AIRD, these women remind us daily: when you empower one woman, you empower an entire community.
