Established on May 27, 2002, Kinama Refugee Camp is one of the oldest and most dynamic camps in Burundi. Since 2022, the camp has been led by the President of the executive committee, Ngisi Gabriel, who also serves as the camp head. He is dedicated to improving living conditions and strengthening community unity among refugees.
Kinama Camp is under UNHCR and ONPRA with various humanitarian organizations, including AIRD, Save the Children, IRC, Help a Child, and TPO. Each partner plays a key role in supporting critical sectors such as food assistance, health care, and education.
However, one partner stands out for consistency and compassion: AIRD. AIRD has proven to be one of the most reliable partners, known for its professionalism and responsiveness.
“AIRD is the first partner we’ve worked with that has never received a single complaint from refugees. They are always there for us and for that, we are deeply thankful.”
Gabriel says.
One of the most remarkable impacts of AIRD’s support is in the sports and leisure sectors. Kinama is the only refugee camp in Burundi that participates in the local football championships, a source of pride and hope for the youth.
“Whenever we travel to play matches in Muyinga, Gitega, Kayanza, and the whole of Burundi, AIRD provides vehicles and encouragement. They send two vehicles to support us. This motivates our young people and brings joy to the whole camp,” Gabriel says.
This initiative has boosted morale, fostered inclusion, and strengthened peaceful coexistence among refugees.
Beyond sports, AIRD remains a dependable partner in transport and logistics, ensuring refugees and partners can move safely and efficiently.
“Even in difficult times, when resources are scarce, AIRD always arrives on time. Their presence makes life here easier and more dignified.”
The Camp President extended warm thanks to UNHCR and to all AIRD staff, especially the drivers, who work closely with the refugees every day.
“The drivers are respectful, humble, and professional. They treat everyone equally and always greet people with kindness. Their behavior shows real humanity.”
Looking Ahead
The leadership of Kinama Camp hopes to see this partnership continue to grow, with additional vehicles and expanded support for basketball, dance, and children’s recreational activities.
“Here in Kinama, we thank AIRD and all their partners for walking with us. Because of them, we continue to believe in a better tomorrow.”
