In the heart of Kyangwali Refugee Settlement, in Uganda, where heavy rains turn roads into deep, slippery, and muddy,  the areas become nearly impassable, a dedicated team from AIRD continues to push forward with one mission: ensuring that life-saving services never stop.

At least three times every week, the AIRD Kyangwali fuel distribution team embarks on difficult journeys across challenging terrain to deliver fuel to more than 24 generators supporting humanitarian operations throughout the settlement. Many of these generators are installed at water pumping stations located in remote and waterlogged areas that become extremely inaccessible during the rainy season.

Using a fuel van provided through the support of UNHCR, the Assistant Fuel Officer and Fuel Van Driver navigate dangerous roads, often risking getting stranded in deep mud for hours before rescue teams can pull them out. Yet despite these setbacks, long hours, missed meals, and exhausting conditions, the team never gives up.

Their dedication, stamina, and courage ensure that critical generators remain operational, enabling the continuous supply of clean and safe water to more than 153,000 refugees living in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement.

Behind every drop of fuel delivered is a direct impact on thousands of lives. Water pumped through these systems supports daily household use, cooking, cleaning, and handwashing, all essential for maintaining hygiene and dignity within the settlement. Through these indirect yet vital services, AIRD significantly contributes to improving living conditions and strengthening the prevention of disease outbreaks and epidemics.

While many may never witness the difficult journeys through flooded roads and swampy terrain, the impact of this work is visible every day in the lives of families who continue to access safe water because a committed team refused to stop.

In Kyangwali, AIRD is not simply delivering fuel; it is sustaining life, protecting health, and restoring hope even in the most challenging conditions.
