AIRD Improving Road Access for Refugees and Host Communities in Maban

AIRD South Sudan Program recently launched a project to rehabilitate roads within the four refugee camps and host communities in Maban Central Administrative centers.

A new 7.4-kilometer access road from Doro Camp to Gufa community center was opened, connecting the communities with the town center. Communities of Gufa now walk with smiles on their faces.

Women now walk safely and freely from our home to the markets in the camps without fear of being attacked. This was a bush, and walking here made it dangerous because of snakes and other harmful wild animals,” Sofia Aumna, a mother from Gufa village, said.

AIRD has also rehabilitated 28.45km of access roads within the refugees’ camps and the Local Government Administrative. The new roads have made transport easy and basic facilities such as hospitals, schools, markets, and places of worship more accessible.

Beneficiaries say the roads have reduced cases of accidents, especially among children and vulnerable people who often get knocked by vehicles and moving donkeys.

AIRD, with approval from UNHCR, has also graveled and levelled office areas for humanitarian partners in Maban County. These include Maban Referral Hospital, the office of the Commission for Refugees Affairs, government offices, and NGOs being funded by UNHCR.

AIRD continues to reaffirm its commitment to enhancing access, safety, and dignity for refugees and host communities across South Sudan.
