In the remote Yallo Woreda of the Afar Region, Northern Ethiopia, AIRD has taken a vital step toward improving health and hygiene by introducing a handwashing campaign at Dibina Primary School. The initiative, which has directly impacted the lives of 300 pupils, is a shining example of how small, practical interventions can yield transformative results.
Through engaging demonstrations and awareness campaigns, pupils have learned how to wash their hands, a seemingly simple but life-saving practice. This has significantly reduced the incidence of illnesses among the students that are related to poor hygiene practices, ensuring better attendance and improved performance in school. The positive ripple effects extend beyond the school, as children bring these lessons home, spreading awareness about hygiene practices within their families and communities.
Teachers at Dibina Primary School have also embraced the initiative. Equipped with the knowledge and tools provided by AIRD, they have become ambassadors of hygiene, educating their families and contributing to a broader cultural shift toward better sanitation.
Mr. Adam Mohammed, the headteacher of the School, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to AIRD for its impactful initiative. “AIRD is the first organisation to come to this school to teach our students how to wash their hands. We are also grateful for the washing soap you gave us because we did not have this. This campaign will reduce sickness among our students and uplift the entire community. We are committed to sustaining and enforcing these hygiene practices for the long term,” he said.
Through initiatives like this, AIRD continues demonstrating its commitment to improving the quality of life for vulnerable communities like IDPs, one small but meaningful step at a time.
