Being home is all I have dreamt of

Divile Munzero, a 24-year-old, is one of the many Burundian citizens who left their Country in 2015 due to the civil unrest that was happening at the time.

The Civil War resulted from political unrest caused by the then-president announcing his interest in running for president again. The announcement sparked widespread demonstrations in April of the same year. Tens of thousands of people fled their Country, hundreds of people were arrested, several protestors and police officers were killed and dozens more were injured.

In fear of being a victim of violence, Divile fled the Country and went to Tanzania. “ When I was in Tanzania, I was told my father died. It still hurts me that I did not bury him. Now that I am back home, I will visit his graveyard and be comforted” says Divile.

In March 2024, she was among the over 600 Tanzania refugees who AIRD returned home to Burundi. She further states that she is very excited to meet her 8 siblings and her mother whom she has not seen in 9 years. This she said while still at Gitara transit center awaiting AIRD to transport her to the community where she comes from.
“ Thank you AIRD for bringing me back home”. She concludes.
