For 80-year-old Maurice Munugwe from Rubelizi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the journey home was more than a physical return; it was the restoration of hope after months of uncertainty and separation.

Since November 2025, Maurice had been living apart from his 11 children, carrying the emotional burden of displacement and longing for the day he could reunite with his family. As part of the ongoing voluntary repatriation process, that long-awaited moment finally arrived when he was repatriated to the DRC through the Busuma site.

The operation was made possible through the partnership between AIRD and UNHCR. AIRD teams managed Maurice’s luggage and provided continuous assistance throughout the journey, while UNHCR coordinated and escorted the convoy to the transit centre in the DRC, ensuring a safe and dignified return.

Maurice’s journey required special attention. Due to hearing difficulties, field teams took extra care to communicate clearly and ensure that he fully understood each step of the process. Staff accompanied him throughout the trip, prioritizing his safety, providing practical support, and facilitating his reception upon arrival at the transit centre.

When Maurice finally crossed back into his homeland, his emotions were overwhelming. He expressed profound relief and happiness at returning home after months of separation from his loved ones. His smile and gratitude reflected the significance of the moment, not only as a return to familiar soil but also as a step toward reconnecting with his family and rebuilding his life.

Maurice’s story highlights the human impact of voluntary repatriation efforts and the importance of tailored support for vulnerable individuals. Through the dedication of AIRD and UNHCR teams, elderly returnees like Maurice can undertake their journey home safely.
